NMN and Thyroid Health: TSH, Hashimoto’s and Test Interference
Does NMN affect thyroid health? Separate hormone-study claims, biotin test interference and levothyroxine questions from proven treatment.

NMN has not been established as a treatment for hypothyroidism, Hashimoto's disease or hyperthyroidism. A thyroid measurement appearing in an NMN study does not show that NMN corrects thyroid disease. It is also important to distinguish a genuine change in thyroid function from interference with a laboratory test caused by another ingredient, such as biotin.
This guide addresses thyroid-specific claims and medication questions. For the broader precursor comparison, see NMN versus NR; for general tolerability, see NMN side effects. Neither a supplement's energy claim nor an isolated NAD+ result can diagnose a thyroid problem.

See Peter MDWhy symptoms alone do not identify the answer
Hypothyroidism means the thyroid does not make enough thyroid hormone. NIDDK describes symptoms including tiredness, weight gain and difficulty tolerating cold, while emphasizing medical assessment and thyroid blood tests 1. These symptoms are not a way to diagnose an NAD+ deficiency.
A person can feel more energetic after changing a supplement without showing that the thyroid gland is functioning differently. Conversely, fatigue while taking thyroid medication does not establish that an NAD-related product is needed. Describe the symptom and its timing to the treating clinician rather than choosing a supplement based on an assumed metabolic cause.
The NAD+ energy guide explains the difference between cellular mechanisms and demonstrated symptom relief. A thyroid treatment claim needs additional evidence about thyroid disease itself.
What the registered NMN hormone study can tell us
A Japanese trial registration, UMIN000025739, describes an exploratory study in healthy volunteers with a target enrollment of 20. It planned NMN administration over 24 weeks and measurements of several hormones, including TSH, free T3 and free T4 2.
This is relevant because it shows thyroid-related measurements were considered in human NMN research. But a list of planned measurements is not a positive result, and healthy volunteers are not a hypothyroidism or Hashimoto's treatment population. The registration does not demonstrate that NMN lowers TSH, treats autoimmunity or reduces the need for levothyroxine.
When someone cites “a study measuring thyroid hormones,” ask for the actual results and the participants' diagnoses. Also ask whether the study was designed to establish a thyroid benefit or merely collected hormone values as exploratory observations. Those are very different evidentiary claims.
TSH, T3 and T4 are related but different measurements
NIDDK explains that TSH comes from the pituitary gland and signals the thyroid to make hormones. Clinicians may assess TSH alongside T4, T3 or thyroid antibodies depending on the clinical question 3. A single number should be interpreted with the appropriate laboratory range and medical context.
An online report that “my TSH went down after NMN” leaves important questions unanswered: Were medicines or other supplements changed? Was the same assay used? What happened to the other relevant measurements and symptoms? Was the result repeated or clinically assessed?
Those questions do not prove the report is wrong. They explain why an individual before-and-after observation cannot establish that NMN treats a thyroid disorder or that someone else should change medication.
| Question | Evidence boundary |
|---|---|
| NMN study lists TSH/T3/T4 | Planned hormone measurements are not proof of thyroid treatment. |
| Biotin affects an assay | A measurement can be misleading without a true thyroid change. |
| NMN with thyroid medicine | No validated replacement or dose-adjustment regimen established. |
Check a blend for biotin before interpreting thyroid tests
Biotin is vitamin B7, not NMN. It can interfere with some laboratory methods, including certain thyroid tests. NIH's Office of Dietary Supplements advises considering this issue when results do not fit a person's clinical presentation 4.
A small study gave ten healthy adults biotin for seven days and tested thyroid measurements on three assay platforms. Interference occurred on two platforms but not the third, and its duration depended on the amount and assay 5. The practical lesson is to tell the clinician and laboratory about the exact ingredients and timing before testing.
This is not evidence that NMN itself causes biotin-type assay interference. A multi-ingredient “NAD booster” may create a different question from a single-ingredient NMN capsule. Do not assume a thyroid result proves a beneficial or harmful NMN effect without checking the formulation.
Ask the testing team whether an ingredient needs to be paused and for how long. There is no universal supplement washout interval supplied by this article, and a laboratory instruction should not be used to stop prescribed thyroid medicine.
Can NMN replace or reduce levothyroxine?
There is no established basis in the sources discussed here for replacing thyroid hormone with NMN. NIDDK describes hypothyroidism treatment as replacing hormone the thyroid cannot adequately produce and adjusting treatment using clinical follow-up and blood tests 1. Feeling different on a supplement is not a medication-adjustment rule.
Ask the pharmacist to review the complete supplement, not just the NMN name. A blend can contain several vitamins, minerals or other compounds with their own considerations. The NMN and medicines guide explains why an absence of a documented interaction does not establish that every combination has been studied.
If a seller recommends reducing thyroid medication as evidence that a supplement is “working,” ask which controlled thyroid-disease trial supports that advice. Decisions about the prescription belong with the treating clinician.
Hashimoto's, Graves' disease and thyroid nodules
These conditions are not interchangeable. Thyroid antibodies may help identify autoimmune disease, while nodules can require a different assessment from abnormal hormone production 3. General NAD-related biology does not establish that a supplement reverses autoimmunity or shrinks a nodule.
A useful treatment claim would specify the diagnosis, intervention and clinical outcome: thyroid hormone requirements, symptoms, antibody findings or a properly assessed nodule outcome. A cell experiment using a related B3 compound cannot establish all of those effects in patients taking oral NMN.
What to bring to a thyroid appointment
Bring the label, the start date and amount of every supplement, recent thyroid results and the medicine schedule you actually follow. Note whether the goal is relief of fatigue, clarification of a changed test or treatment of an established thyroid condition. These are separate reasons for review.
Ask whether a result fits the symptoms, whether assay interference needs consideration and what follow-up is appropriate. Our NAD+ testing guide explains why a different biomarker cannot settle these thyroid-specific questions. For now, NMN thyroid claims remain unestablished; accurate diagnosis and reliable interpretation of tests are more useful than choosing a presumed thyroid-boosting dose.
Frequently asked questions
Does NMN lower TSH?
A reliable thyroid-treatment effect has not been established. A registered NMN study listing TSH as a measurement is not evidence that NMN lowers it in people with thyroid disease.
Is biotin interference the same as an NMN effect?
No. Biotin is a separate ingredient that can affect some laboratory assays. Check the complete product and tell the testing team what you take.
Can NMN replace levothyroxine?
No replacement regimen is established by the sources reviewed here. Do not change prescribed thyroid treatment based on a supplement response.
Does NMN treat Hashimoto’s disease?
The evidence discussed here does not establish treatment of Hashimoto’s autoimmunity or reduced thyroid-hormone requirements.
